В Восточном Забайкалье находятся уникальные археологические памятники Монгольской империи – Хирхиринское городище и Кондуйский дворец. Они известны еще с XVIII в. и раскапывались с середины ХХ в. С.В. Киселевым и другими исследователями. Результаты последних раскопок открывают новые перспективы. Можно уверенно считать, что города начали строиться здесь с первых этапов существования империи во второй четверти XIII в. и, по всей вероятности, продолжали существовать в XIV в. Хирхиринское городище традиционно интерпретируется как резиденция Есунке, сына Хасара. Вывод основан на упоминании его имени в надписи на так называемом Чингисовом камне. Письменные источники дают возможность прояснить некоторые другие подробности его биографии и позволяют рассматривать Восточное Забайкалье и соседние зоны Внутренней Монголии (Хайлар) как территории, подконтрольные братьям Чингисхана – Хасару и Темуге-отчигину.
