Автор статьи, опираясь преимущественно на собственные полевые материалы, собранные среди австралийских аборигенов этнической общности вик-мункан в 2005–2015 гг., анализирует, как бывшие охотники и собиратели, утратившие в условиях европейской колонизации множество старинных навыков, обычаев и обрядов, тем не менее в значительной мере сохраняют традиционные нормы взаимопомощи и социально-психологические установки, препятствующие развитию имущественной дифференциации в их среде («системы немедленного возврата», «моральная экономика» – Woodburn 1988; Peterson 1993, 2002; Peterson and Taylor 2001, et al.). В этом автор видит залог продолжения социальной жизни аборигенов, залог самого существования их сообществ и основу личностной сохранности составляющих эти сообщества людей. Приводятся разнообразные, порой весьма причудливые примеры того, как люди, приверженные древней нормативной системе, обращаются сегодня с деньгами и предметами современной городской культуры. В заключительных разделах статьи рассмотрены негативные тенденции культурной динамики викмункан в последние десятилетия и ставится под сомнение возможность взаимного сближения и конструктивного преобразования глубоко различных культурных традиций и ценностных ориентаций, столкнувшихся между собой на земле вик.
