Статья посвящена отношению «отца американской антропологии» Франца Боаса к Советскому Союзу и его взаимоотношениям с российскими/советскими коллегами. Используя как опубликованные источники, так и неопубликованную переписку, автор рассматривает следующую тематику: совместную работу и дружбу Боаса с В.И. Йохельсоном, Л.Я. Штернбергом и в особенности с В.Г. Богоразом; отношение Боаса к царскому и советскому режимам; его попытки создать регулярный обмен аспирантами между США и СССР и совместные научные проекты ученых двух стран. Статья показывает, что, хотя американскому антропологу и не нравились методы советских властей и идеологическое давление на науку (в том числе этнологию), он старался не критиковать СССР и ее ученых публично, a делать это частным образом. Причиной тому были либерально-социалистические взгляды Боаса и боязнь оказаться в лагере антикоммунистов. К концу жизни ведущего американского антрополога важную роль в его отношении к СССР сыграло сближение с Коммунистической партией США.
