Термин Карпатская Русь возник в XIX в. для обозначения территории, населенной русским (русинским) населением Австро-Венгрии. Границы этой территории в течение многих веков постоянно сужались в результате ассимиляции восточнославянского населения соседними народами. В средние века в Венгерском королевстве существовала Русская марка. Проживали русины и в Трансильвании. Об этом свидетельствует многочисленная русинская топонимика. В XIX – начале XX в. под Карпатской Русью подразумевались регионы компактного расселения русинов Австро-Венгрии (Зарубежная Русь, Подъяремная Русь): Галичина, Буковина, Угорская Русь.
