Рассматриваются особенности употребления в России XVI в. неофициального титула русского государя «белый царь». Б.А. Успенским, В.В. Трепавловым и другими исследователями установлено, что, как правило, он употреблялся выходцами с Востока, а непосредственно в России - исключительно в XVIII-XIX вв. В литературе отмечались отдельные упоминания «белого царя» в более ранних источниках - в Повести о Флорентийском соборе Симеона Суздальца (ок. 1447-1448 гг.), Похвальном слове Василию III (ок. 15331534 гг.), а также в записках С. Герберштейна и Дж. Флетчера. Автор статьи привлек новый неизвестный источник, в котором фигурирует «белый царь», -запись рукописного Октоиха 1547/48 г. В работе показано, что, скорее всего, его происхождение не было связано с церковной и политической элитой. Делается вывод о том, что неофициальный титул «белый царь» проник в среду переписчиков книг, которые представляли достаточно многочисленные слои русского общества XVI в. - белое и черное духовенство, светских лиц невысокого статуса.
