The effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of high chromium stainless steel was investigated. The experimental studies were performed for the test samples of stainless steel subjected to electrolytic hydrogenation in a three electrode electrochemical cell at a controlled constant cathode potential during 6, 12 and 24 hours. For each specimen a stress-strain curve was obtained and mechanical properties such as yield stress, tensile strength and rupture elongation were determined. It was found that the mechanical properties are effected adversely by hydrogen. In the case of counterpart hydrogenated for 24 h fracture occurs in the absence of necking.
