Статья посвящена этимологии русского столярного и плотницкого термина пёрка ‘сверло’. Анализируются имеющиеся версии происхождения слова: в связи с рус. перо (В.И. Даль), в связи с рус. переть (М. Фасмер), в связи с нем. napper, nepper ‘сверло’ (С.А. Мызников), – обсуждаются их преимущества и недостатки. Рассматривается возможность альтернативной этимологии, возводящей рус. пёрка к прибалтийско-финскому источнику – предполагаемому деривату гнезда püör- с базовой семантикой вращения. Приводятся аргументы в пользу высказанной версии.
