Статья посвящена истории изучения чжуанов. Чжуаны - народ, проживающий на юге КНР. В настоящее время являются самым многочисленным этническим меньшинством Китая, их численность составляет примерно 16 млн чел. История изучения чжуанов насчитывает более 100 лет. В ней можно выделить несколько этапов, имеющих свои отличительные признаки. Чжуаны по-прежнему остаются одной из самых «невостребованных» учёными этнических общностей КНР. Также приводятся причины активизации изучения этого народа в 1950-е и 1990-е гг. ХХ в. Кроме того, анализируются различные трактовки причин, побудивших правительство КНР дать чжуанам автономию на уровне провинции и организовать Гуанси-Чжуанский автономный район (ГЧАР) в 1958 г.
