С 1839 по 1842 г. известный русский филолог-славист И.И. Срезневский был в заграничной командировке. Он посетил Чехию, Моравию, Силезию, Верхнюю и Нижнюю Лужицы, Крайне, Штирию, Каринтию, Фриулию, Далмацию, Черногорию, Хорватию, Славонию, Сербию, Венгрию, Галицию, изучал местные говоры, собирал фольклор, знакомился с культурой и обычаями славян, а также с литературой и источниками, хранившимися в местных библиотеках. В его «Донесении адъюнкта Срезневского г. министру народного просвещения из Братиславы от 5 (17) апреля 1842 года» и «Путевых письмах» к матери содержится немало интересных сведений об угорских и галицких русинах и их языке. Будучи в Галиции и Венгрии, он встречался с видными деятелями русинского Возрождения Д. Зубрицким, Я. Головацким, И. Левицким, А. Добрянским и др. В последующем И. Срезневский поднял русинскую тематику в статьях «Мысли об истории русского языка» (1849), «Русь Угорская» (1852) и др. К сожалению, работы ученого о русинах оказались сегодня по каким-то причинам невостребованными.
