Творчество известного художника Закарпатья А.М. Кашшая освещалось в художественной критике советской поры широко, но истоки вдохновения мастера были показаны поверхностно. В частности, не бралась в расчет скрытая конфликтность академической традиции и непосредственного взгляда русина-горца, который воспринимает пространство не так, как житель равнины. При этом знаменитая красочность народного искусства, к которой прибегает мастер, – вовсе не миметическое подражание природе, а стремление расподобить мир человека с достаточно «тусклым» по гамме своей реальным пейзажем. В картине Кошшая «Венеция. Канал Гранде» (собор Санта Мария делла Салуте) присутствует нарушение канонов венецианского пейзажа (Каналлетто, Гварди и др.). Тут нет привычных громад моря и неба, между которыми возникает натуралистически выписанный ряд архитектурных шедевров. Центр зрения – громада храма, верхний край которого срезан рамой; мы смотрим на нее снизу, с противоположного берега канала. Перпендикулярно взгляду зрителя двигаются к вратам собора лодки, преодолевая сопротивление воды; им тесно, что психологически чревато взрывом, опасностью. При этом храм выступает в качестве идейно-эмоционального центра, достигаемого через преодоление сопротивления водной стихии, которая здесь подчеркнуто материализирована. Вода и небо, разделенные присутствием человека, зеркально зыблются белесоватой синью, причем живописец использует кобальт, как бы разрежающий контуры вещей. Динамизированная в постимпрессионистском духе композиция, контраст туманной голубизны и яркого удара солнца по зданию справа создают экспрессивный образ скрытой борьбы. В равнинно-маринистическом просторе Венеции гостю-горцу не хватает возвышенности. И, согласно М. Элиаде, Священная Гора – центр мира, место встречи Неба и Земли. Такой централизующей Горой предстал прославленный собор перед горцем-русином, верным собственному складу мировосприятия.
