В середине 1950-х гг. страны Западной Европы обсуждали следующие варианты дальнейшего развития своего регионального экономического взаимодействия: углубление процесса европейской интеграции путем создания таможенного союза или расширение межправительственного сотрудничества через формирование зоны свободной торговли. Разница подходов в Великобритании и странах континентальной Европы к данному вопросу привела к образованию двух экономических группировок: Европейского экономического сообщества и Европейской ассоциации свободной торговли. В статье на основе анализа американских дипломатических документов рассматривается отношение США к созданию обеих экономических группировок. Выявляются причины, по которым правительство США отдавало предпочтение учреждению таможенного союза (ЕЭС), а не созданию зоны свободной торговли (ЕАСТ). Поскольку в данный период в американской политике по отношению к европейской интеграции превалировали политические мотивы, связанные с укреплением западного блока и «сдерживанием» Германии, администрация США поддержала создание ЕЭС в расчете на усиление политического единства стран Западной Европы.
